|THE KIT-ANT JUNGLE
HOW ANTS FIT WITH THE OTHER KITS:
The ECO System Starter Pack includes four inter-related kits. Three of them are connectable biomes: a worm biome, this ant biome and the ECO Dome, which is the plant biome. Each kit can involve a separate team of children. Each team will become expert in all things to do with their biome.
The Ant Biome is the Carnivore or Herbivore Biome (consumer biome). Like a city, it consumes food and oxygen, and produces waste and carbon dioxide. Find as many opportunities as possible for the Ant team to stand up and talk to the class and answer questions about their projects and discoveries.
WARNING: Make sure any children collecting and working with ants are NOT known to be allergic to ant bee or wasp stings. If you have any suspicions, do not let the child take part.
ANTS: BUY OR COLLECT? PROS AND CONS:
We do not supply ants in the kits. In some countries it may be illegal to collect some species of ants in the wild. Please check local laws.
ANTS BY MAIL:
PROS: In those countries your ECO System supplier may supply approved live ants. Alternatively go online and find some live ant suppliers. Ants are delivered by mail to your door!
CONS: Most ants by mail come without larvae or pupae for the ants to look after. We find ants collected with their own ant larvae and pupae really seem to help keep the ants busy and ”„happy”¦. Plus they are huge fun to observe at work. Also larvae and pupae hatching out keep the colony alive longer (ants usually die after about 90 days). We never collect queens. This would destroy a nest.
